- Human Rights
- Abolition of the slave trade has happened in 1833. However, it was shocking to find out that slavery still exists in different forms in world we live today. Hundreds of people are deprived from basic human rights and forced to work over hours with very low wages. Women, especially, are subjected to situations that leave both physical and emotional scars; having to work restlessly without any wages and rest days, brutally beaten and abused, and constant sexual harassment. Concerned about this fact, BIS Grade 9 students have decided to take action to raise awareness about this issue to eventually decreased the amount of exploited workers.
Combating Poverty with the Bali Life Foundation
- Bali Island School
- Poverty
- Despite efforts from the government, thousands of Indonesian citizens are still living in poverty. It is not hard to miss these straitened circumstances in Bali, as evidence is noticeable within every district of the island. Children, especially, are subjected to situations that deprive them of their education and basic human necessities. Coming to the point where they must enter dangerous situations that also compromise their health; walking car to car begging for money to support their family. Burdened with the knowledge that poverty still remains in our communities, and wanting to make change, BIS has decided to take action against this issue by raising awareness and collaborating with the Bali Life Foundation.
Recycling Paper
- Dhahran Ahliyya Schools
- Waste Management
- Our theme is waste management, and our solution is recycling paper in our school and local community. As it is a persistent issue that affects our school, our community, and our globe.
Plastic Bottle Recycling Program
- Dhahran Ahliyya Schools
- Waste Management
- Our presentation focuses on a program for maximizing plastic bottle recycling within a community-- school for example. The program consists of several factors that ensure its success. Firstly, increase the price of water bottles in the school canteen by one unit. Subsequently, we add a vending machine to the school's lunch area which will provide a coupon for every empty water bottle returned. These coupons now account for one unit to spend at the school canteen. Thus the canteen will not be impacted financially as its finances have not changed, rather they are being circulated and end back at the canteen itself. Furthermore, this program will provide an immense positive incentive for people to recycle their empty water bottles.

Then join Community X! The "X" means that this workshop can be relevant for any global issue "X," so delegates representing a wide range of interests can equally participate.
Community X aims to help delegates identify and understand the importance of spheres of influence. Moreover, the workshop aims to present case studies and ideas to help delegates impact their own spheres of influence. We will begin by defining relevant terms to bridge knowledge gaps. Then, we will engage delegates in a physical simulation in which they will actively identify their own spheres of influence. Lastly, we will present 2 case studies projects that we are doing right now to spread ideas for future workshops and to examine how spheres of influence can be effectively used in project design.

Handicapped Orphans in China

- We want to explore the amount of orphans and orphanages around China, especially those that are handicapped, as this increases their chances of abandonment, especially those located in rural and suburban areas. Many individuals cannot afford to feed or take care of handicapped children, which increases the amount of support they require. Shanghai American School GIN has recently paired with a nearby orphanage affiliated with Mifan Mama, a nonprofit organization that attempts to provide aid, housing, and such to handicapped orphanages. Not only do we try to schedule weekly visits for the children, we also run fundraisers to fund the organization and the operations for the children. We'll be sharing our experiences, and asking for advice on what else we should do.
